It’s a complicated relationship between landlord and tenant, so to encourage a harmonious relationship, here are our top 6 things landlords wish tenants knew...

1. Your landlord may be an accidental landlord, where the home you live in may once have been their home and for one reason or another they have had to leave. In these cases, your rent quite often pays the mortgage on the property and any missed payments make a huge difference. Want to stay on a landlord’s good side? Set up a direct debit or standing order to ensure your landlord receives your rent in good time.

2. Always try to be calm. This tip may be sound obvious but being polite and calm really does go a long way. If your landlord is renting a previous home or a family home they will have an emotional connection to the property. 3. Landlords try to take care of their properties, but they can’t be everywhere all the time. Is there something they need to know about? Is something broken? Let them know. Help by being your landlord's eyes and ears.

4. Tell the truth. Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed if you’ve accidentally broken the shower or your child has dropped a toy in the toilet and blocked it. By speaking to your landlord and being honest the problem can be resolved as quickly as possible.

5. Communication is key! Tell your landlord what’s going on. Did you lose your job? Has your roommate gone off the deep end? We’ve all been there before, and we know what it is like. Please do not put your head in the sand and hope whatever problem you are having will go away. We are all human after all.

6. We all have busy schedules, if you’re experiencing issues or waiting to have something fixed, work with your landlord. You may need to let your landlord into your apartment on your day off, you may need to have workmen take over your lounge for a day. Whatever is required to complete a job please work together with your landlord. By sticking to times and schedules the problem can be resolved quickly.
